Nomono Sound Capsule review: the immersive audio recorder that redefines sound capture, recording, and workflow

Sound Capsule Overview

Thanks to the generosity of Philippe Chapot, editor-in-chief of Podcast Magazine, I had the opportunity to test the Nomono, a portable all-in-one audio recorder featuring an Ambisonic Format B sound capture system from the recording unit and four wireless microphones.

As the name suggests—it’s truly ‘no mono’!

Hands-On Experience: Simplicity and Efficiency

Imagine arriving at your recording location with a lightweight device weighing just over a kilogram. With a smooth motion, you detach the protective capsule, which doubles as a charging base, and take out the recorder, which automatically powers on.

The four Stellar Mics inside are color-coded for easy identification. Once removed from the unit, the wireless microphones are instantly detected and can be clipped or attached using magnets.

In less than a minute, you’re ready to record!

Ambisonics: A 360-Degree Audio Experience

For those unfamiliar, Ambisonics is a three-dimensional audio capture and reproduction technique that gained popularity with VR and 360-degree videos. Unlike traditional formats, Ambisonics treats sound as a spherical environment, capturing all directions from a single central point—in this case, the Nomono recorder itself.

Why Ambisonics Matters

  • Uses four-channel B-format encoding (W, X, Y, and Z axes) for full 360-degree sound.

  • Ensures flexible decoding for various playback setups.

  • The recorder’s position during capture determines the listener’s perceived position during playback—so careful placement is key!

  • The wireless mic tracks can be mixed separately to balance individual voices within the Ambisonic field.

Pro Tip: Position your base unit strategically to align with the scene you want to create. Think of it as placing the listener’s “head” in the perfect spot for an immersive experience.

The Four ‘Magic’ Capsules

At first glance, Nomono’s four wireless mics resemble industry standards like RØDE or Shure, but they bring much more to the table:

  • Premium brushed metal finish

  • LED color indicators for easy tracking

  • Integrated windscreen for outdoor recording

  • Auto-charging when placed back in the capsule

  • Magnetic attachment for quick, secure placement

These mics offer new creative possibilities, such as:

  • Placing a microphone off-camera for immersive audio in fictional storytelling or theater productions.

  • Capturing specific instruments in live music performances.

  • Creating layered, directional soundscapes in immersive podcasting.

At the end of a session, the separate mic tracks allow precise mixing, letting you adjust voice proximity or ambiance as needed

Key Technical Features

Recorder Unit

  • 8-element spatial recorder for Ambisonic capture.

  • Wireless microphone system with four high-quality mics.

  • 10-hour battery life, expandable to 25 hours with the charging case.

  • Internal storage supports up to 12 hours of recording.

  • Cloud sync automatically uploads recordings when Wi-Fi is available.

Nomono’s Cloud-Powered Workflow

Nomono simplifies recording on the go, but post-production remains crucial. The Nomono Cloud platform provides:

  • Basic editing tools (free for up to 10 hours of storage, with 2 hours of AI enhancement).

  • Advanced mixing capabilities for professionals.

  • AI-powered noise reduction and voice enhancement.

While the post-production process requires some learning, the built-in tools ensure an efficient workflow for both beginners and advanced users.

Real-World Use Cases

1. Interview & Podcasting

Recording in a busy café might sound like a great idea—until background noise overpowers voices. With Nomono, you can:

  • Capture ambiance using the Ambisonic microphone.

  • Isolate voices with wireless mics for crystal-clear dialogue.

  • Mix both elements for a natural yet intelligible soundscape.

2. Remote & Documentary Recording

No wireless interference or dropouts—each wireless mic records audio locally and syncs to the base station afterward. This means:

  • No signal loss even at a distance.

  • Reliable recording in outdoor or mobile scenarios.

3. Immersive Audio Production

From spatial music recordings to 360-degree storytelling, Nomono allows highly flexible mic placement and immersive sound design.
